Modern Zen

In this residential project, Jane’s clients were looking to update their outdated master bath and bedroom suite as well as to incorporate a meditation space within the home. They wanted improved function for their more relaxed lifestyle and a simple, clean line space. They are honing their focus on the practice of Qi gong and want that same feeling reflected in their home. In general terms, Qi gong is practiced to increase energy flow and improve health through gentle, graceful, and repeated movements.

Their biggest requests were to eliminate the tub, to make the bedroom flow to the bathroom yet leaving an open, inviting path and to provide and share with their guests that “calm and relaxed” feeling.

Jane removed the existing tub to make way for a large walk-in shower, complete with an eye-catching contemporary shower panel, with contrasting natural bamboo and sleek stainless steel. The rectangular porcelain tile with a bamboo effect was installed vertically to add visual height, while paired with a stone and glass mosaic tile in a wrapped stripe for interest. The glass block window streams natural light through the door-less shower entrance, and can be seen from the bedroom.

To continue the functional clean lines, she installed a large vanity with a travertine countertop and integrated double stone sinks. The custom bedding in a pesto green with clean white lines, adds to the calm, while giving way to the lightly stained natural wood of the furnishings. A touch of Asian influence adds to the organic atmosphere.

The slated, 4 foot, resin composite, Buddha Statue, by Phillips Collection, sits prominently on a lava rock table; welcoming all guests as they enter the meditation area, opening to the desert landscape oasis outside. This “Modern Zen” space was a true hit!
