Modernized Split

This was project was a major renovation and alteration to a 1950s split level house in White Plains, NY. The house had been renovated and added to over the years in several clashing styles. The goal of this project was to use and enhance the existing forms of the house to create a cohesive and timeless composition. The windows were enlarged and moved to enhance the functionality of the rooms and create a stronger connection between the interior and exterior of the home. The exterior was clad in dark gray fiber-cement clapboard with ipe rainscreen accent to draw attention to the home's entry doors. In the back of the house a new "box" of a was constructed in place of an old gable framed structure for the new master bedroom. The box is clad in an ipe rainscreen and has floor to ceiling windows overlooking a generous yard and pool. The home's large soffits were refinished in douglas fir v-board stained to match the ipe below. The new roof was covered in dark bronze standing seam metal. On the inside, original oak floors blend with new oak and porcelain tile that closely resembles concrete. The kitchen ceiling was opened up and the joists were left exposed. Track lighting sits up between the joists providing versatility in this important room. Lighting throughout the house was designed to be versatile in order to spotlight an ever changing collection of art.
