Modernizing the Vintage Condo
A new kitchen was the dream for this single, working mother, one with more storage options & room for her 12 yr old to hang out or do homework in the evening. The home, a 1920’s condominium, had retained the original layout of the day: formal foyer, living & dining rooms. The main entrance to the kitchen was through the maid’s room which had long been converted into an office, but the entry to the kitchen was still awkward, while the formal dining room remained largely under-utilized.
We needed to create more functional living areas, reflective of the family’s lifestyle while staying in touch with the style and age of the building.
We were able to open up the space, allowing a better flow between rooms by creating new entries and redesigning existing rooms. The kitchen received a new entrance directly from the foyer, mimicking the existing arches in the entryway. We incorporated an in-kitchen space for sharing meals and completing homework. Moving existing furnishings, the formal dining room was transitioned into a family room, and the swinging-door entry between dining room and kitchen was traded out for an open doorway. By reconfiguring the spacious living room, a new formal combined living and dining area was created for entertaining friends and extended family.
