The owners of this two-story summer home wanted an unusual mountain retreat that would blend European elegance with rustic western materials, reflecting the surrounding Utah mountains. (The inspiration for this interior was, in fact, the home in "A River Runs Through It"). To that end, I married formal English aesthetic and textured mountain style, using materials—such as plaid—specific to both looks to tie it all together. I wanted the home to feel Western without looking obvious. I like to use natural materials in a way that has familiarity without being literal. I describe my style as modern traditional. In this home, I used a lot of textured and tactile things, but in a very tailored way.
