National Trust Holiday Cottage, Killerton Park, Devon
Woodford Architecture + Interiors have recently completed a project on the Killerton Estate a Grade II* Registered Park and Gardens owned by the National Trust. An eco-refurbishment and full interior design package have transformed Park Cottage into an exemplar sustainable holiday cottage.
The interior scheme references the Arts and Crafts taste for muted colours, papered ceilings and a preference for simple stylised patterns of nature. Furniture has been responsibly sourced, either made in the UK from reclaimed or FSC certified timber, or is vintage. We are always keen to employ the skills of crafts people and on this project have worked with basket makers, blacksmiths, furniture makers and upholsters.
We have strived to source products that use low-impact production methods, and natural materials from responsible sources to complement the green technology that has as part of our eco refurbishment increased the energy efficiency of Park cottage by over 50% up from F rating to B.
An air source heat pump now provides heating, and the addition of cavity wall insulation and mineral wool insulation between floors and in the loft space helps retain heat keeping the cottage at a constant comfortable temperature for guests. Photovoltaic panels mounted on a bespoke bicycle storage shed supply electricity to the cottage.
The kitchen has been hand built and painted in the UK by Devol. The bedroom wallpaper is by Rapture and Wright and is hand printed in the UK using vegetable inks on FSC paper. Wool fabric woven in Scotland has been used to upholster the sofa and to make throws and cushions; Elanbach provided the fabrics for the dining chairs, printed on unbleached linen and made here in the UK.
This project demonstrates how a redundant tired building can be transformed within listed building planning constraints to provide a showcase sustainable holiday cottage.
