Native Plantings for New Construction
New construction projects are usually done as a spec'd landscape when its purchased from the actual builder. However, my client was her own manager and asked me to assist her on the design. She stated that she wanted low maintenance, and simple and clean lines. Given that her home is traditional and geometrically square, I chose a three layer palette across the beds. Two to four inch boulder rocks stretch across the entire perimeter of the front foundation to the driveway to function as drainage from runoff. The plants chosen were Petite Pink Oleander for the rear row, Blue Arrow Juncus for the middle row, and Society Garlic for the front row. Along the brick wall, the corner contains Purple Fountain Grass and Belindas Dream Roses to help screen the utility boxes; each bed is anchored with Red Yucca. These particular specimens will tolerate the direct sunlight from sunrise to approximately four in the afternoon when the sun sets behind the roof line. Majority of these plants are evergreen and can also withstand extreme freezes that we have recently been experiencing here in South Louisiana.
