When designing in the west setting sun in south Louisiana it is best to use drought tolerant plants. My favorite, and go to, is Lantana. They bloom 9 months out of the year starting in early Spring and lasting to the first frost. I favor the tropical look in my landscapes and they help the fun colors of summer stay alive and blend nicely with annuals. Lantana are very vibrant in color and work great as a filler plant, or a border with the dwarf species. They also benefit the wildlife by attracting pollinators, especially butterflies.
