Reducing the energy demand for this home was the key to making this house energy independent. The entire building envelope (exterior walls, roof, windows) was designed differently to ensure minimal air infiltration and provide a high resistance to heat transfer. The exterior of the building frame was wrapped with four inches of foil-faced rigid foam insulation as a means of air-sealing the building envelope and increasing thermal value. Windows with high U-values were selected for optimal energy performance. The use of low-VOC products and a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) help to insure healthy indoor air quality. LED lighting, water saving plumbing fixtures and native landscaping all contribute to making this a truly sustainable home.
