Not Your Typical Roman Shade
The new home owner of This Old House, really liked the old fan bottom shades that were in the house when she bought it. Upon seeing the old shade, I was concerned if it could be made and be child safe. I talked with my workroom, took an old shade to her to examine, and she figured out how to make it. Next the homeowner wanted the same shade throughout the house. So, I suggested a neutral fabric with some sort of texture for interest, and this what we picked out. Now... how do these shades work? When they are completely down they look like a flat roman shade with NO fan. When you start the lifting process the center raises first to form the fan bottom. As you continue lifting the shade folds as any other flat roman shade would with the fan at the bottom...Wow! I suggested that the narrow windows on both sides of the fireplace and the shorter windows in the bathrooms, we do a standard flat roman shades. The fan would not work in the narrow windows and the fan would cover most of the view, when wanted, in the shorter bathroom windows. OK.
