Octopus Dreams
This project began with a picture of an octopus and a dream of a cozy home. As the project evolved, we developed a detailed design code for this space that now can be converted to any habitat. We defined a personal home design that is convertible to any shape and size of home.
Now that the project is complete, Christine has a clear idea of what her design is about, in colors, shapes, textures. If she wants to add something to her space in the future, she knows what it should look like. She has a map of her journey. That's why her space will grow in balance.
A major factor in this design was the way vibrant colors would surround the neutral tones of the furniture. We thought about how the human eye would perceive a summer day on the beach: blue is the sea, and marigold yellow is the Sun. Based on the biology of our eyes, this combination of colors naturally makes the interior more bright.
Designing in a rental apartment is tricky; if you move, you don’t want to leave all of your design work behind! But while the layout can't go to the new home, the idea can travel with you. Every element has to be in connection with the other elements, and have a clear reason why it is there. For example, in Octopus Dreams, there is a clear function for the bedroom armoire: we needed extra storage in the room. Originally, it was near the window; we moved it to enlarge the perspective when entering the room. If Christine someday decides to move to a home with better closet space, this piece of furniture can be easily converted into a kitchen buffet or hallway storage. She could still keep the unit with a new function, because visually it fits the concept of her home’s personal style.
This style, this vibe of the home, reflects grains of Christine's personality: warm, kind, intelligent, and thoughtful. It reflects her lifestyle, her work ethic, what inspires her, and the natural needs of her pets and her own way to take care of them. Nobody could copy her style; it wouldn't feel organic the way it feels in her home. Unless you're her twin that she doesn't know about, it would just be formal repetition, without meaning or depth. So we're not worried to share this design, because this interior would work for one person only. It fits Christine like a tailored suit.
