Pleasantly Prairie

Our client wanted a comfortable and welcoming vibe for their circa-1915, Prairie-style home. We installed lush plantings and designed spaces to gather, areas for the children to explore, and privacy from the city sidewalk. LandWorks provides weekly maintenance and plant care for this client as well.

We redesigned the walks, patios, open spaces and garden spaces. The brick walks were re-set with eclectic bluestone medallions in spirit with the bluestone patio and concrete stoops received bluestone veneers.

The built-in planters are loaded with bold annual flowers. A pair of matching Katsura Trees provide shade, ambience and fragrance. A row of feathery, hand-pruned hemlocks give year-round privacy. Fringe-tree, bottlebrush buckeye, goatsbeard, big-leaf hosta, and golden sedge provide visual texture and punch.

The “grotto-like” children’s garden features a mini forest of Amelanchier, ferns, hostas, hellebores and astilbes drifted among the steppingstones. Weathered holey boulders provide seating in “secret” gathering areas.

The end result features an ample lawn, spaces to gather and textural foliage, all complementing the horizontality of this vine-covered home’s striking Prairie architecture.
