Pool House, Stony Creek, CT
Located in the Stony Creek / Thimble Islands Historic District of Branford, this rectangular pool house was designed to closely relate to the main house on the property. Although relatively small in scale, the structure has presence and an appealing design. The roofline is reminiscent of an Asian farmhouse. It is clad with yellow cedar shingles. The gable ends of the house feature triangular windows which permit natural light to enter the house and maximize the use of otherwise lost attic space.
Running perpendicular to the main roof is a barrel vault with a lunette window, which in addition to allowing more sunlight to enter the room below simultaneously gives the room added height. The building’s main entrance is protected by a metal-clad shed roof supported by free-standing Doric columns, which also creates a shaded sitting area. A large oval window and expansive sliding glass French doors complete the façade of the structure.
The pool house primarily serves as a gathering place for entertaining family and friends. The first floor consists of a well-proportioned sitting room with staggered bluestone flooring. It also includes a service counter, changing room, and storage area for pool equipment. Overlooking the sitting room is a loft space with a wood framed balustrade that is accessed by a ship ladder. Located with direct access to the changing room is an enclosed outdoor shower.
