Poolside in Pewaukee

The homeowners enjoy vacationing, but professional obligations do not allow the family to travel often. The solution was to create a resort-like retreat, right in their own backyard. Specific criteria included areas of both sun and shade, a place for a fire and a fountain, and a self-contained entertainment area that would eliminate frequent trips to and from the house.

This design by David J. Frank has an axial line centered from the large rear windows of the home to the spa, pool and fireplace. Careful consideration was given to each line of sight and the results draws you into the relaxing, exotic atmosphere.
Overlooking the pool
The focal point of this landscape is the elevated terrace with fireplace. It, along with the surrounding seating walls, serves a dual purpose as a retaining wall for the slope behind it. The three tiers not only provide aesthetic interest, but also enhance the auditory effect of the water.
Poolside Terrace with Fireplace
Natural stone slabs and clay pavers create a beautiful staircase from the home to the pool and cabana. The surrounding line of mature trees provide the desired shade and seclusion.
Private Cabana
A built-in spa abuts the swimming pool. Bull-nosed bluestone coping surrounds both for style and safety when entering or leaving the water.
Relaxing spa
After renovation by David J. Frank, this yard comes to life. In the opened space, the custom pergola demonstrates its value in creating dramatic light and providing vertical interest.

At the top of the staircase, colorful annual arrangements welcome you to the cabana and pool deck.
Annual flowers enhance poolside retreat
Wrought iron furniture is an integral part of the overall layout and design. Chairs and chaise lounges with comfortable, colorful cushions add to the resort-like atmosphere, with the red accents complimenting the brick of the home and landscape features.
Furnishings around a pool
Painstaking efforts were made to preserve large, existing oaks on the site for their shade and spectacular fall color. Also in keeping with environmental sensitivity, this is a salt water rather than chlorine pool, eliminating the need for harsh chemicals.

The cabana was instrumental in developing a resort-like atmosphere, allowing the family to truly escape. All the necessary amenities – a full kitchen, barbecue, restroom, changing room and shower eliminate the need to “go home.”
Cabana for outdoor entertaining
Architectural details of the main house are carried over to the fireplace and accentuated with dramatic lighting. The jack arches, keystone and columns add continuity to the outdoor addition.
Dramatic lighting around pool
The mosaic inlay on the pool deck is a treasured piece of art from the Taj Mahal. The homeowners felt that incorporating it in their new landscape was the best way to share it with others. Lit from below, it is the crowning jewel of this beautiful design.
