The owners first concern was privacy, since the existing raised patio felt more like a stage from which they could see and be seen by neighbors. They also wanted shelter from the hot sun so they could enjoy the area in the afternoon and early evenings. Finally, they wanted to maintain the open areas of the yard, so the new amenities essentially needed to stay within the footprint of the old patio. The resulting design is a compact and intimate entertainment space that includes an outdoor kitchen and dining area that is defined on all sides – and overhead – by elements of the landscape.
