Printers Row Loft Interior Renovation
This loft conversion was done in the historic Donohue Building located in Chicago's "Printers Row". In the late 1800's it housed M A Donohue printing which printed many publications until the late 1960's.. In 1979 the building was the first loft style conversion in Chicago. At that time the building was a mix of residential lofts and office space lofts. Over the years the office spaces have been phased out. This original space was one of the last office lofts in the building to be converted to a residence. We used a curved wall that is a reflection of paper going through the printing presses to tie the unit together from one end to the other. It is a long linear space with oversized double hung windows along one whole side. We also created an open staircase that used the existing timber joist that were removed for the two story open space, and re-purposed them into the stair treads for the new main staircase from the lower level to the upper level. As much as possible, the original structure was left exposed as a tribute to its past. Much of the artwork and fixtures were acquired by the owners in their travels around the world.
