Race Street

Located on the corner of Race and Religious Streets in the Lower Garden District of New Orleans, this project was a complete remodel of the existing Creole cottage and merging of the neighboring Greek revival townhome and slave quarters. Eckalizzi Designed a connector addition that added functionality to the main home and reorganized the site plan. Home owner and would be interior designer Granville Semmes designed the interiors. Race & Religious street is now a event center, hosting weddings and exclusive parties. Recently Race & religious street was featured in Travel & Leisure magazine as well as used for a backdrop in Anthropolgie Store’s catalog.

Welcoming the age and history of the building, original plaster and exposed brick were left on display when possible, while wood details throughout were carefully repaired and revitalized.

High ceilings, original windows and doors, and hand chosen ceiling fans work together to circulate air and light throughout.

A second floor gallery and catwalk connect two of the project's buildings, providing opportunities to take in views of the grounds, the surrounding city, or the events taking place below.

Punctuating the historic courtyard, the pool provides and welcome suffusion of water to the site. Shade trees moderate the light on the pools surface, creating a constant dance of light and shadow around the grounds.

Authentic doors, windows and fixtures ensure the exterior of the project speaks to it's history, while housing modern amenities within.

The new kitchen delights the culinary inclined and lay man alike, providing modern appliances, ample storage, and a welcoming atmosphere without detracting from the building's history and aesthetic.

Embracing the inevitable aging of building materials, the original wood beams, floors, and exposed brick are on display as much as the artwork and furnishings the envelope.

The pool helps naturally cool the courtyard space, while the interplay of light and shadow across its surface and rhythmic rippling melodies provide a soothing ambience to events and parties, or to quiet strolls around the grounds.

Modern light fixtures and vintage looking ceiling fans ensure the comfort of visitors. Bountiful rugs help protect the original wood floors, refinished throughout.

Traditional awnings and shutters, amid the plastered facade help the exterior capture the essence and story of the project, as well as the surrounding city.
