REC CENTER

Built in Eastern Washington on a client's ranch, this project includes a basketball court and climbing wall, in addition to a study, art studio, game loft and shower/sauna facilities. It was important to the client for the space to have a lot of daylight which was achieved through clerestory and corner windows.

Looking down from the Second Floor

The Rec Center is set into the hillside such that the lower floor is at grade on one side, and the upper level is at grade on the other. Despite being a large structure, the overall scale is tempered by that, as well as having roof that sits as low as it can over the upper story.

The Rec Center in the Landscape

This model was built as part of the schematic design process for the recreation center. Smaller art studio, game room, and office spaces occupied the ends of the building, while the main open space was placed in the middle.

The model shows the upper story spaces connected by a catwalk/balcony, with clerestory windows all the way around to bring natural light into the space. Spaces at the ends of the building could be closed off from the main space with large sliding doors.

Interior Perspective

The primary entrance included glazed doors with a protective canopy, and glazing from them up to the underside of the roof. Thick insulated walls with significant thermal mass helps maintain the temperatures inside the space.

Primary Entrance

Set in a hard mountain environment, wide eaves help protect windows from snow and harsh weather in the winter, and limit solar heat gain in the summer.

Clerestory Windows

Simple massing keeps the building from competing with the landscape, and gives the building a solid look.

Side Elevation

The opposite end as the main entrance includes a smaller entrance and less glazing.

Lower End

The opposite end from the entrance. Much of this elevation and the right hand side of the structure are at grade, while the left side is actually about a story down from grade.
