By adding a bold splash of red to an existing tall concrete retaining wall, we transformed this small garden into a vibrant play and lounge space. A simple planting palette of bamboo, grasses, and vines complement the new wall color. The upper level is an outdoor playroom with a climbing wall and checkerboard fall surface made from recycled tires. The lower level becomes an extension of the living room with a fire pit, fountain, and wood seating made from an old Oakland bridge. This garden was the 2008-2009 Sunset Magazine Dream Garden Small Space winner.
