Rio Vista Mid-Century

After purchasing the personal residence of local mid-century designer and builder Ken Birkemeier in the SW hills of Portland, the clients desired to breathe new life into the house while paying homage to some of the original architecture. The whole-house remodel included reorganizing internal spaces for better modern-day living. The kitchen was opened up to the living and dining rooms and space for an enlarged main level bedroom suite was made room for by relocating an existing guest bedroom to the lower level.

A key feature to the original home was the revealed roof structure in the great room which was maintained in the new design while maximizing views towards the east to Mt. Hood and downtown Portland by increasing glass in the east facade. Vertical cedar siding with a pre-weathering stain was used on the exterior with painted accent panels.
