River House Renovation
This 1950's Contemporary was resurrected into an upscale, energy efficient, 21st Century riverfront retreat for a well-traveled Australian couple. At this riverside home the gabled roofs of the original structure were maintained. They provided a foil on which to create a stark contrast between old and new. The addition is distinct in both its white facade with rectangular windows and its flat rather than angled roofs.
This project received Energy Star Certification with a final HERS score of 23. Double height walls of glass face south for passive solar gain. Large folding doors and lift and slide doors create a complete indoor outdoor lifestyle. The spaces are stripped down to the bare essentials of glass, white walls and natural wood. Simple yet unique custom details portray the owners interest in material, color and form. The many rooms of different heights and volumes flow into each other and keep the attention focused on what matters: The bold and ever changing green and blue landscape of the trees, sky and water.
In October 2018, this project also won the second annual "Residential Green Building Award" from the Westport Green Task Force.
