Rutland Penthouse

After being out bid on many apartments, the owners of this newly renovate duplex sought to create an apartment of their own from an old undesirable unit. Gutted to the studs, this two floored apartment was transformed into a gracious open living space. An old fireplace was removed and the spaces were reorganized all with a focus on creating a large open volume focusing on one of the main features, an expansive view. To reinforce this feature, a new gas fireplace was located to capture both these features from the comfort of the new living room. The character of the spaces upstairs and down are unique. With details tying the two floors together, each has their own personality. The lower level being in the more historic portion of the building has a more traditional feel you might expect in Boston. The upper floor, attic level, with a broadly sloping ceiling is treated in a more modern way to reinforce the open concept and deliver a light and airy presence. A new staircase to the roof and new skylights bring in natural light further adding to the open feeling. Topping off the design, the owner sought an all-white interior. Strategic use of subtle shades of white mixed with slight color offset and tie this home together.
