Hazelnut trees in the background create privacy and shade for the house. Space for a seating area was left in front of these with a raised 'hugelkultur' bed along the street to screen the seating area and provide an area for low-water food production. The hugelkultur is anchored at either end by shrub cherries, with a mix of other perennial foods, pollinator attractors, and nitrogen fixers.
