Studio House

When a neighboring property became available in Chevy Chase, MD, the homeowners saw an opportunity—not just for expansion, but for experimentation. They envisioned a working pottery studio to share with family and friends, expansive gardens, and room to roam for their dogs. But the new house also needed to function independently, with bedrooms and a full kitchen for guests.
Fowlkes Studio began with subtraction: removing a heavy, opaque wing of the existing house and replacing it with an open side porch. This new element creates a gracious connection between the two homes, while steel windows and doors open the studio fully to the shared landscape. The porch also serves as an informal entry—welcoming, visible, and deeply integrated with daily life.
