Toronto Strawbale Addition

You won't believe this house is made out of straw and built by the Fourth Pig Coop. Smooth as silk plaster finishes hide any differences between the original 80 year old masonry house and the 2 story straw bale addition. We are very proud of this project and the work it took to have the City of Toronto issue a building permit to allow this very unusual wall system. The energy use of the home was reduced by over 80%

The original Arts and Crafts paneling in the Living Room and Dining Room were protected and refinished. All new plaster finish on walls and ceilings. Antique lighting fixture was found in Montreal market. Original glass doors were refurbished.

Before there were 2 walls separating the stairs from the front and back of the house and no stair to the basement. By adding a few beams we had a custom 3 storey oak staircase built to replicate the details of the original. Light and views flood through the house.

The original window had been blocked in by a bad renovation. We opened it up and integrated a small desk into the kitchen and attached it to the stair to create this nook.

Prior to plaster the walls are constructed of a modified wood frame structure 3'-0" o.c. The bales are placed inbetween and the floors are hung from the interior of the frame. This construction ensures an air tight - 2 hour fire rated -energy efficient home.
