Warming Up a Cozy Kitchen With Natural Materials

The before and after photos of this project tell the whole story. The location of fridge, sink, and stove didn’t change. What did change was the choice of natural cherry wood cabinets, solid oak flooring, and granite countertops.

What also changed was the removal of the soffits which allowed the new Cherry Wood cabinets to reach all the way up to the ceiling, adding valuable storage space.

Cherry wood was used for lower cabinets, and for the base of a peninsula with down-draft range. The design added new stainless steel appliances and under-mounted double sink. Granite countertops tie it all together.

Note the Travertine backsplash that serves as a design element both for this kitchen and for a basement entertainment room with bar. See “New Fireplace Transforms Cold Basement into Warm Family Room.”

Pendant lighting above the sink and peninsula and in-ceiling incandescent lighting throughout turned a cold kitchen into a warm, inviting space for cooking and entertaining.
