Washington Valley Hillside Garden
The front entrance walkway was laid out to wind through a garden as it traversed the slope from the street to the front door. The existing steep terrain was tamed by installing natural granite boulders and drylaid granite retaining walls. We also constructed irregular bluestone landings to create a place to rest. They are skillfully placed within the garden exposing only the next set of natural bluestone slab steps. By utilizing this design technique, visitors never become overwhelmed by the amount of steps they will walk up or down while entering and exiting the home. The amount of hardscape and stone is softened with many types of plant material : evergreens, flowering trees & shrubs, ornamental grasses, perennials and groundcovers. A hungry deer population dictated the plant varieties.
