This West Seattle project transformed an underperforming backyard into a highly functional, year-round outdoor living space designed for cooking, entertaining, and everyday family life.

The homeowners' goals: creating an extension of the home that could support year-round hosting, outdoor cooking, and a safe play area for their growing family. With Seattle’s wet climate and compact lots in mind, we recommended a more comprehensive design to ensure the space would perform long-term.

The final design features a covered outdoor kitchen located directly off the interior kitchen for seamless indoor–outdoor flow. An existing patio was relocated to improve functionality, with original pavers carefully salvaged and reused as part of the new layout. A pergola provides structure and weather protection, while integrated lighting and irrigation systems—controlled via app—allow for flexibility and comfort throughout the day and across seasons.

New planting beds, mulch, sod, and proper drainage for the outdoor sink completed the project, resulting in a durable, welcoming landscape optimized for Seattle living.
