#10 Kitchen

Older kitchen brought into the 21st century. It was laid out poorly, dark and inconvenient for the chef of the house.

The cooktop ended up being located in a place where we needed a downdraft, which created an opening for the rear wall. This is a very clean look, and functions fine for the cooktop the clients use. It also feels more open than having a hood over the cooktop

Pamela Foster design and renovation: There was little natural light in this kitchen, which only had one small window over the sink. Dark, dark, dark!

Pamela Foster: A new large single bowl sink with marble counters, subway backsplash all the way to the top of the wall cabinets made this space updated and current. We added two large tall cabinets for pantry space, but incorporated them into the design so they don't look like the typical pantry.

Pamela Foster: The homeowner had numerous cookbooks when we began the design process, but decided to "downsize" to a reasonable number which are front and center now and easy to access with a new bookcase which forms a peninsula with bar height overhang for casual eating.

Photo credits Pamela Foster: the rear hall entry was outdated and dark with oak cabinets and dark granite counters. The entire space had soffits at the ceilings, which made the 10' ceilings feel wrong when walking into the main area of the kitchen.

Photo credit Pamela Foster: The outdated oak cabinets did not have all drawer cabinets which made the space difficult to access. The dark oak cabinets and granite counters were not attractive.

I designed larger windows for the sink location, which gives much more light into the ktichen. The brick was re-worked by my wonderful mason; no one can tell the difference.

Custom breakfront with top glass doors and open artifact display area. The bottom of the original cabinets in this space were 24" deep. I wanted a wider door opening to the adjacent dining room, so we made the new base cabinets 15" deep and the top cabinets 9" deep. This allowed a wider opening.

The smaller depth of the base cabinet in this breakfront allowed a wider cased opening between the dining room and kitchen. The upper cabinet depth is only 9", but is plenty of room for glasses and china.

Originally there was a double door pantry with fixed shelving, and it was 24" deep. We made the new pantry cabinet which matches the kitchen cabinets 15" deep, which allowed a larger opening from the rear entry, and the shelves are adjustable.

The peninsula in this kitchen was outdated and had a wall at the end of it, which we removed in order to open up the space. The ceiling was also soffitted and we removed that too. A large difference from before to after.

The rear entry door was outdated. We replaced it with a 1/3 12 lite door. We popped the ceiling in the middle, but had to keep the soffit around the room b/c of lighting and venting. We removed all the angles and softened up the wall color. It makes everything feel larger and cleaner.

Pantry made to match kitchen cabinets. The interior is spacious and has adjustable shelving.

This photo shows the kitchen sink run, which gives a good glance at how I sometimes pull the sink base and sink cabinet out about 3" so there is not a straight line for the cabinet run. We had plenty of walk space in this galley kitchen, so it was not a problem to bump the sink out a bit.
