OVERLOOK Westport, MA
Our goal was to create a subtly sophisticated environment for owner to escape the city for weekends and summer vacations. The romance and simplicity of the shingle style seemed a natural fit as an archetype given that the owner permanently resides in a very historic and ornate city home.
We visited properties throughout Westport in our search for the perfect building site. We finally chose a site composed of fields, stone walls, and trees…one reminiscent of rural farmland…but adjacent to the ocean at 50 feet above sea level! The design parti was developed based on the surprise of the site’s spectacular ocean views from the second, third, and forth levels. Participants in the architectural experience are slowly introduced to the beauty of the site as they proceed vertically through the house. The conclusion of this experience is within the residence’s rooftop monitor…about 85 feet above sea level overlooking Little Compton, Quicksand Pond, Goosewing Beach, Cuttyhunk, the Vineyard, and Westport Harbor…270 degrees of spectacular water views. At this point one can look out and notice that the entire architecture and landscape is designed about these ocean views.
The final solution reflects the integration of New England’s historic “farmhouse” and “shingle style” vernaculars. Although simple at first glance the intricately designed colonnades, crown moldings, and formal landscaping give Overlook a stately presence while the playful geometry and details extol its individual sense of character.
