Parents of five wanted to remove a closet by the front door that cramped the kitchen, add an island, and incorporate a calming aesthetic to their busy lives.
The stained oak cabinets create a sense of balance while the hood helps anchor and enliven the kitchen all at once. Open shelves display personalized and easy-to-reach items, the warm undulating square tile adds a layer of depth while keeping the space light, and the island pendants add interest and draw the eye in. The microwave and ice maker were placed for easy access, while keeping small people out of the cook’s prep area.

The traditional fireplace surround was traded for one with clean, simple lines, and a former clerestory window originally above the fireplace was removed to create a place for the family to enjoy downtime together.

The new space evokes calm while allowing the family to spread out from the kitchen to the living room with ease.
