A Modern San Francisco Refresh With Timeless Materials and Thoughtful Flow

This San Francisco home was built in 1906 in Edwardian style common for many San Francisco neighborhoods. When redesigning the look for the home, the homeowners wanted to pay respects to the era in which the home was built while also making it accommodating for the modern San Francisco lifestyle.

The home received a comprehensive kitchen and a bathroom addition that blends modern design with everyday functionality. What was once compartmentalized space lacking cohesion is now a luminous, well-curated space, connecting cooking and entertaining into an open plan.

The renovation focused on opening up the heart of the home. The kitchen was previously smaller and had a small laundry area adjacent. The living room space was separated by a wall. We incorporated the previous laundry space into the kitchen footprint and opened the wall between kitchen and living room.
The space was opened up to combine a cooking, dining, bar, and living room into one complementing and cohesive area.

Clean lines and a restrained modern sensibility set the tone, while custom details and high-performing surfaces elevate everyday moments.
In the kitchen, streamlined cabinetry and thoughtfully planned storage maximize every inch without sacrificing style. Subtle variations in finish — from smooth matte cabinetry to softly textured stone countertops — create a layered, sophisticated look, while integrated appliances and minimalist hardware maintain visual calm. The layout enhances traffic flow and makes entertaining intuitive, with generous prep surfaces that pivot seamlessly to conversation areas.
Just beyond, the bathroom was added to the primary bedroom with the same eye for detail that informed the kitchen design.

The unit previously lacked an ensuite bath, so the homeowners sacrificed some space and a small closet to create an ensuite bathroom that upgrades the primary bedroom space.

Soft neutral tilework and minimalist fixtures lend the space a spa-like calm, and clever storage keeps daily essentials out of sight but easily accessible. Soft, ambient lighting and multiple niches created drama and additional storage on each wall.

Throughout the project, neutral tones grounded in warm woods and calming whites are punctuated by subtle material contrasts, ensuring both rooms feel unified yet distinct. The result is a home interior that’s not only beautiful in photographs but truly livable — ready for everything from quiet mornings to spirited dinner parties.
