Midcentury Modern Kitchen in San Rafael — A Streamlined Space with Elevated Function and Style.

Location: San Rafael, California
Style: Midcentury modern / Eichler
Design Goals: Improved flow, bespoke storage solutions, elevated materials, dedicated coffee zone.

I am a big fan of midcentury modern and especially Eichler homes, so I always get excited when I get an opportunity to collaborate on an Eichler home.
The homeowners — two professionals with a passion for culinary exploration and entertaining, wanted to stay true to The Eichler design philosophy and the MCM feel of the home, yet still have a kitchen that performs for the 21st century. The kitchen originally had an awkward peninsula dividing the space in the middle, minimal storage and the cabinets were not congruent with the midcentury modern style.

The homeowners are also avid coffee drinkers, so we wanted to create a dedicated coffee area where the Vivaldi countertop espresso and accompanying accessories can be easily accessed without disrupting the flow of the rest of the kitchen.

The new layout unwraps the kitchen from its closed-off past, creating visual connections and a welcoming sense of movement.
A large island that incorporates dining and prep area allow for entertaining while cooking. It also provides abundant storage while maintaining a calm, seamless aesthetic. Integrated pull-outs, utensil organizers, and deep drawers ensure that every tool and pan has a place — yet the overall look stays uncluttered and elegant.

Modern materials used were a textured laminate that mimics the look and feel of rift white oak balanced by a soft greige matte laminate on the uppers to maintain the feel of midcentury minimalism. An orange back-painted glass backsplash pays homage to the midcentury colors while also making the cleanup of the backsplash a breeze.
Sleek Wolf ovens were placed in a distinctly European style allowing for easy off the floor access while not reaching all the way up to the ceiling and closing off the space. A Blue Star chef’s range and hood for the cooking zone promised a pro cooking experience while a counter depth Subzero fridge blends seamlessly with the cabinets in the sink area.
