Danville Residence
Danville Residence — A Light-Filled Contemporary Living + Kitchen Transformation
The homeowner had a clear vision from the beginning to open up a small dark kitchen. The original floor plan offered potential, but boxed-in sight lines and dated finishes limited how the spaces could be used day-to-day. The living, dining, and kitchen zones functioned independently rather than working together as a cohesive living environment. The cabinets were sparse and dated and there was no flow. Small windows and separated dining room didn't lend itself to entertaining
The homeowner wanted a more seamless, social layout — one that supported gathering, cooking, and unwinding all in one continuous experience.
Our Design Approach
Instead of expanding the footprint, we focused on clarity of movement and unity of materials. By removing the wall between kitchen and dining room and adding a series of windows on one side, we connected all three zones into a cohesive whole, while adding plentiful light and open plan workspaces. Making the island area the cooking zone allowed for entertaining while preparing and for using the island as a serving area.
Modern sleek cabinetry and dark countertop were created as a backdrop to colorful art and artful lighting. Combining minimalist kitchen space with transitional dining room furniture was the home owner signature.
The Transformation
The kitchen is now the true heart of the home — bright, inviting, and effortlessly connected to the living and dining areas. Sleek modern cabinetry, and curated surfaces establish a serene atmosphere that carries throughout. Updated lighting and thoughtfully selected furnishings help the spaces transition gracefully, giving the home a modern yet timeless feel.
This redesigned main floor now supports everything from casual gatherings to formal dinner events and entertaining, with each zone feeling distinct yet undeniably part of the same experience.
Why It Works
The cohesion of color, form, and flow turns the Danville Residence into a unified living environment. The result is a contemporary home that feels open without being stark, warm without being cluttered, and perfectly aligned with today’s lifestyle — refined, functional, and welcoming.
