A Rustic Renovation for Often Overlooked Rooms

Finding A Solution

When people think about renovating their homes, the first rooms that come to mind are usually the kitchen and a bathroom, maybe the basement. Spaces like your mudroom and family room are often overlooked, but it's where you spend a lot of your time. Phil and Melissa of Barrington needed a refresh of both of those overlooked rooms. The shoes piled up near their back door were getting out of control; they wanted to mount their TV on their fireplace and add more storage to the family room.

The couple began their search for a home remodeling company on Houzz. They quickly found eleven-time best of Houzz winner Advance Design Studio and were immediately impressed with their portfolio. Next, they needed to decide when to renovate and how much longer they could put up with the clutter in their mudroom.

After the uncertainty of last year and the additional time we spent in our homes. People are more in tune with their homes than ever before. Phil and Laura needed to solve their clutter problem, and they decided to act fast by calling Advance Design.

“There really is probably no other time in history that you are more in tune with your home. I bet you know exactly what you want to make it truly fit the way you live by now,” Advance Design Studio Co-Owner Christine Jurs said .

One quick phone call and Project Designer Nicole Ryan came out to their home to solve their problems. After meeting with Nicole, Phil and Melissa knew that Advance Design Studio could help and refresh their home to reflect their style.

“Style was very important,” Nicole said. “Getting the TV above the fireplace, and extra storage for ‘stuff.’ They needed shoe storage and organization in the back mudroom for coats, hats, and shoes and mail.”

Style Meets Function

Phil and Melissa loved the farmhouse, rustic style, and wanted to incorporate reclaimed wood into the space. A custom-built mantle with matching open shelves on both sides of the beautiful stone fireplace accomplished just that.
With the TV mounted, the space to the left and right of the fireplace was free for custom white Dura Supreme Crestwood cabinets with Hickory tops, transforming the once cluttered space into a functional, rustic, inviting family room with plenty of storage and room for decorations.

Custom-built white storage lockers from Dura Supreme eliminated the piles of shoes by the backdoor in the mudroom. The boot bench opens up for more storage, while the shiplap walls and brushed bronze hardware add texture and contrast against the dark wood shelves and floor.

Nicole designed the space to fit Phil and Melissa’s unique personality. She said the clients were thrilled with how their new space turned out. Not only are guests in awe of the renovations, but their storage problems are a thing of the past.

“It is white and bright, with simple lines, but the texture of the shiplap and wood tops/shelves added to the industrial farmhouse charm! Style meets function!” Nicole said.
