Post Modern Kitchen for the 21st Century

Jeff and Vicki desperately want to update their dated Wheaton, Illinois kitchen. Their old kitchen didn’t match the design of the rest of the home and it simply didn’t function well, which started their search for a kitchen designer and home remodeler they could trust.

Enthralled with the idea of Post Modern design movement which began in the 60’s and stretched into the 90’s, Jeff and Vicki wanted a designer who understood the combination of unconventional ideas that would result in a fully functional kitchen design, while still upholding the creatively playful design indicative of the era.

“We moved into the house a few years ago, and while we like the space and the openness of our kitchen - it functionally didn’t work,” Vicki says. “And it was dated, very dated and old.”

They found what they were looking for in Advance Design Studio and designer Scott Christensen. Scott helped them narrow down their list of ideas and created a beautifully designed space that worked perfectly for their taste. They wanted the benefits of a modern kitchen with clean lines, more storage and much more functionality than they had in their previous kitchen, but they wanted also a unique looking space that would turn heads.

Most of the changes in the new space were targeted towards updated appliances, better planned storage, and a show stopping look that makes a statement all on its own. Although the footprint stayed very similar to the original layout, the finished kitchen is night and day different from the original.

“We wanted our kitchen to have a lot of function and be well design and that is why we chose Advance Design Studio,” Vicki says.

Frameless Maple Bellmont Cabinets in the super chic Metro door style with Gloss White and Autumn stain were utilized throughout the kitchen. Minimal tubular stainless steel hardware contributed to the Post-Modern Contemporary style. A remarkable waterfall countertop made from Arctic Quartz with a hint of soft white gloss graces the smart looking frameless cabinetry of smooth maple with a textured look. Your eye is immediately drawn to this wrapping detail, accentuating the stand-alone hood and the clean, floating shelves that complete this contemporary look with style and function.

Two elegant thick wood shelves float across the stunning marble wall. Although they were a bit nervous to lose the storage, Jeff and Vicki wanted to be true to the style they were looking to emulate and committed to the minimalist look. When it was finished, they were glad they did. The new design is great for cooking Vicki says. It is simple and practical; instead of searching through cabinets for a serving dish, they are within easy reach on the shelves. It also makes putting dishes away easier, adding the functionality that the couple desired.

Large format 24”x 48” Calcutta Marble porcelain wall tile creates stunning counter-to-ceiling backsplashes. The dramatic feature immediately draws attention and delivers the clean lines typical of Post Modern style. The new stainless-steel steam oven, induction stove, refrigerator and dishwasher complete the kitchen’s post-modern look and make cooking and cleaning much more enjoyable.

The butler’s pantry just outside of the cooking area compliments the rest of the kitchen, while providing additional storage as well as functionality, while adding an upscale touch of elegance. A Folia Glass tile backsplash with gold sprinkled throughout provides a striking contrast to the white cabinets and countertops, where as the open glass shelves displaying glassware give the compact space a glittering focal point. The mini-fridge and undermount sink create new entertainment space away from the busyness of the kitchen, giving Jeff and Vicki an additional area to serve food and drinks when hosting guests or simply a morning tea and coffee.

The couple is extremely satisfied with how the new kitchen turned out. Scott, Project Manager David Nagorzanski and the Advance Design team gave them a kitchen that not only functions like a well-oiled machine, but is a jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring kitchen that they are proud to show off.

“Everything is wonderful,” Vicki says. “We are really enjoying it.”
