Abelia

Abelia are versatile, beautiful plants. Semi-evergreen (maintaining a portion of their leaves in winter), these flowering shrubs bloom for months from mid-summer through frost. Their fragrant flowers attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators.

Most abelias are hardy to USDA zone 6 and warmer. Two notable exceptions are Ruby Anniversary™ abelia (USDA zone 5) and Abelia mosanensis (USDA zone 4, spring-flowering). These two varieties have the potential to bring this long-blooming, landscape-friendly plant to a much wider audience.

Ruby Anniversary™ gets its name from its ruby-red new growth. This long blooming, hardy abelia boasts dark, glossy foliage and white flowers with soft pink bracts - these fragrant blooms are a butterfly magnet.

Striking bronze-orange foliage emerges in spring, mellowing to an attractive lime-gold with white bell flowers as the season progresses. Bronze Anniversary™ is also a unique addition to a container garden.

Sunny Anniversary™ Abelia (Abelia x grandiflora)
The largest blooms of any abelia, Pinky Bells™ offers pendulous, lavender-pink flowers that begin in spring and continue through fall. This petite shrub also makes for an alluring container specimen.
Pinky Bells™ Abelia
This unique abelia deserves much wider use in the landscape. Its long, gracefully arching branches are covered in powerfully fragrant flowers each spring, It is hardy to USDA zone 4, which is otherwise unheard of among abelia.
