Located on Martha's Vineyard, this 1300-square-foot vacation "camp" is set within a windswept, rolling terrain overlooking Vineyard Sound. The residence, completed in 1998, is comprised of three buildings. The essential spaces of the home were distilled into separate structures, creating a small cluster of simple, contemporary cedar-clad buildings. The central structure, which houses the shared living room and kitchen, is flanked by two cabins housing the master bedroom and guest bedrooms. Each structure was positioned to create passage-ways between the buildings that framed views of the landscape and the Sound beyond. These passageways are, in essence, lenses that acutely focus the eye on the beauty of the coastal environment. Additionally, sliding doors at the living room make inhabitants feel like they are sitting in a rural field with all the comforts of home and a roof deck provides unobstructed views of the sea and sky. Establishing connections between people and between people and the environment is central to the design; the multi-building solution creates a condition where these connections are most possible.
