Aspen Alps Condominiums U105

This compact, ground floor condominium, with low ceilings, lives large following a contemporary renovation with midcentury furniture. Everything from the cabinet pulls to the fireplace facing material was designed to visually raise the height of the ceilings and increase the sense of spaciousness.

The tall dining table doubles as a kitchen island. The same flooring material was used throughout most of the unit to increase the visual flow of space and make the unit appear larger. Folding chairs for overflow seating are "stored" as wall hangings.

The contrasting ceiling treatment above the dining table/island anchors the eating area in the space.

The wide sliding barn door allows the living room and den to be part of the same space or separated for privacy when the den is used for overflow sleeping or television room. Varying materials, window shade pockets and other treatments add interest and depth to the low ceilings.

The palette of gray slate flooring, museum white walls and black beams serve as a backdrop, to colorful furniture and art. Easily movable furniture was used in the den to facilitate the extension of the sleeper sofa.

To increase the perceived size of the living room, and create more usable space, the existing cantilevered fireplace hearth extension was removed and the oversized mass of the fireplace was reduced by covering the river rock with new, textured narrow tiles.

The den was converted to allow for overflow sleeping by incorporating a built-in daybed and a sleeper sofa. Through the use of a wide sliding barn door, the space can be open to the living room but also be closed-off for privacy.

A small niche was carved out of the entry hallway to create a place for coats, hats and bench. As with other rooms in the unit, a colorful paint color was used to create a focal point and backdrop to the space.

The shower wall tile extends to the rest of the bathroom and unifies the different uses almost blurring the line of where the shower ends.
