Beachfront Rental
A neglected property located on exclusive Kiawah Island, SC was crying out for attention. GHI+D’s mission was to give this penthouse condo a new lease on life as well as adding additional room for the client’s large family. The designers took advantage of the unit’s existing 2-story ceilings by adding a second level loft, bathroom, and generous owner’s closet above the dining and living areas. The new ceilings were coffered to add visual interest and the illusion of height. Stained millwork was selected to provide contrast against the fresh finishes throughout. Wild Sea granite, accented by the iridescent mosaic backsplash, set the color palette of the home. The foyer and dining areas are accented by walls of metallic wall covering and a shattered glass dining table offers an unexpected sculptural element. The spiral staircase leading up to the loft addition separates the Dining from the Living Areas, where the neutral color palette is accented by whimsical folk art fish and a classic egg chair. Upstairs, a glass railing was used to avoid obstructing the coastal views and allow for natural light. The design successfully marries the owner’s eccentric taste in art with a traditional sophistication, providing a stunning retreat for vacationers.
