Intown Residence
Winner ASID Design Excellence Gold Award 2011 / Single Space - Residential (Bed Room)
A pair of empty-nesters hired the designers to update their home after the last of their four children moved-out. They had been living in a house that hadn’t been touched since its construction in the mid-80s. The first project they wanted to tackle was their Master Bed Room by creating a comfortable, relaxing retreat. The challenge was to incorporate the existing architecture and materials into a fresh, updated design. The givens were heart pine floors and exposed beams, a rustic stone fireplace and amazing woodland views. The designers also had the client’s extensive art and accessory collection at their disposal. Given these parameters, they decided to play with pattern, texture and eclectic furnishings to achieve the goal. The walls, doors, trim, and built-ins were all painted the same neutral. A flat screen television was fitted into the existing millwork with components hidden in the cabinetry below. The existing plantation shutters were removed from the windows to open up the views and add height and panels in a flax and aqua floral were added to soften the hard architectural elements and give prominence to the windows. The layout of the room was planned along the longitudinal axis from the head wall to the fireplace. A custom headboard in the same fabric as the window treatments was designed with bedding in the same palette but in a contrasting check pattern. Pops of orange were added on monogrammed pillows, throws and welt trims to tie in the warm heart-pine floors. An antique Oushak rug anchors the bed and bench. An antique painted side table and antique painted chest flank the bed and are accompanied by paintings from the client’s collection and a variety of accessories that provide color and texture. Other antiques incorporated are a wrought iron faux marble gueridon, a painted and gilded glass top gueridon, a quirky Louis XVI style chair, and Mello Stevens glass paving block drink tables. Other traditional elements include a ratchet bench at the end of the bed, a wing chair in leather and a bobbin chair in a ticking stripe. These are countered by a contemporary chaise in leather, a stylized wing chair in silk velvet, a large-scale bronze sculpture, modern bronze floor lamps, iron candlesticks and a crystal baluster table. The design is completed by the incorporation of the client’s oil paintings and stone and terra cotta accessories. The result is the creation of complement between the new and existing, antique and contemporary, polished and raw, vibrant and neutral into a single cohesive design.
