Bonus Room Renovation

Taking an awkwardly shaped bonus room in a windowless basement and bringing it to life was one of my favorite DIY projects of the year. The project's aesthetic blends modern touches with art deco inspiration while inviting some playfulness with warm pinks and purples.

The accent walls were the major focal point of the project and cost just under $75.

This project features pieces from Albany Park and World Market along with custom artwork by Jessica Abella.

The completed space allows the black walls to make the elongated room feel a bit more cozy with the accent wall pulling you in. Out of view on the right is a small built in nook where the tv is sat.

A look into the long narrow bonus room, some of the new furniture had arrived but you can see how long the space is and the lack of character.

I painted the entire 25 foot wall along with the short end wall in black making the room half black and half white. The room will be used as a multipurpose office and living space.

For the shorter black accent wall I wanted to create a modern - art deco shaped accent wall. To do this I used 1x2 boards, cut them down to three different heights and then stained them to match the existing wood trim in the space.

Before installing the wood on the accent wall we lined each piece up to ensure placement of the pattern was centered. We started install with the centermost board and used an extra 1x2 as the spacer for placing each subsequent board. Boards were nailed into place.
