Catskill Woodlands

Plans for this secluded, 12 acre woodland property took into consideration its severe weather conditions and wildlife of all kinds. The owners wanted to develop all four cardinal points up to the forest edge while maintaining the natural feel of the site, ensuring low maintenance, maximizing the glories of every season and minimizing the hand of Man. One of my main inspirations was a gorgeous Hemlock that became the focus for both the west and south gardens. It anchored the sweeping perennial beds and the walkways that connected the south and west patios giving shape to the lawn areas.

This dry river bed was designed and planted to connect with a French drain necessary to control water rolling across the driveway. I added a variety of different-sized gravel, stones and boulders for a natural look.

This garden, edging the front walkway, supplies color all year long with Juniperus squamata "Blue Star'. Myrica pensylvanica - which leafs out in the spring along with Iris,- peonies, Heuchera, and Sedum.
