Charleston Residential Bulkhead

In February 2009 Jon Guerry Taylor & Associates, Inc. (JGT) issued plans for the construction of a new timber bulkhead at a private residence, located on Beresford Creek, in Berkeley County, South Carolina. The bank along the property was experiencing severe scour and erosion due to swift current and boat wakes in the creek. JGT designed a timber bulkhead to contain the soil and prevent additional erosion along the creek bank. The new bulkhead is approximately 110 LF and has an exposed height that varies from approximately four feet to approximately six feet. In order to ensure that the bulkhead was properly supported structurally, JGT incorporated tie-backs at approximately five foot spacing along the entire length of the bulkhead. Each tie-back is connected to an anchor pile with drag piles to provide the required support for the bulkhead. Filter fabric was installed along the back side of the new bulkhead to prevent soil loss and weep drains were installed to allow release of water from behind the bulkhead; reducing hydrostatic pressure on the bulkhead.
