Digital Makeover

Imagine a beautiful 6,000 square foot regal home nestled within the quiet western suburbs of Illinois, still articulately decorated for Christmas with cherished family heirlooms, precious antiques and such. Not quite the typical scene for a high-tech smart home application, not to mention an obstacle course nightmare for A/V installers.

The challenge for this home was to add technological equipment to a traditional setting yet blend these new age components so as to not interfere with the existing elegant décor. However, the homeowners did not want to lose any of the innovative features offered by smart home applications as a result of these aesthetic demands. Ultimately, the homeowners goal was to bring their home into the 21st century technologically making it easy to use yet maintaining that classic appeal.

While Procom initially thought interior design to be their biggest challenge, the installers were quick to realize that their biggest fear came in when they began working with a myriad of cumbersome wires around a home filled with priceless collectibles. However, always cognizant and respectful of their surroundings, Procom’s installers successfully rewired the entire home with no damages. Inevitable with any new installation, in a few places where the homeowner’s old NuTone intercom system was replaced with a new OnQ Selective system walls had to be touched up to match the original décor.

As part of their decision to install a smart home system, the nostalgic homeowners wanted the ability to easily and quickly watch home movies of memorable family events (weddings, graduations, etc.). As part of our solution, we transferred their entire VHS movie collection to digital format and made it available via video distribution system. The family photos are now available via AppleTV and often used as a screen saver during family events. This was perhaps the highlight of the entire application.

The final A/V system consisted of (10) independent audio zones and (8) independent HD video zones. All the audio and video sources are shared between zones. The whole system can be controlled via (8) system remotes, an iPad and a 10” wireless Control4 touchscreen. The Control4 keypads are also programmed in modes featuring common activities such as Evening, Away, Party, Good Night, etc.
