An interior renovation and rear addition to a Georgian “4 square” home includes a new family room, mudroom area, and a new master bedroom suite. Contrasting the compartmentalization of the existing rooms, the new family room addition opens up to the existing dining room and enlarged kitchen. Large corner windows look out to rear yard spaces resulting in expansive views throughout. Stucco and stained vertical cedar siding were utilized for the addition while one brick wall to the north ties into the existing home’s facade to “fly” past the addition and form a landscaped bench. The lighter language of the stucco and wood siding was intended to spring forth from the brick. The material pallet is tied together by a common eave datum line; holding the old and new in a new balanced composition.
