Following cues from an angled site running parallel to an adjacent park and the Chicago River beyond, our design of an addition to an existing 2 unit building captures river views while angling our roof to the south to maximize opportunities for solar photovoltaic. The resulting form differentiates from the front of the existing 1920’s vintage building. However, like other narrow Chicago lots, this one cloaks the design differences reflecting the very different eras in which they were each conceived. This freed up opportunities making the new spaces responsive to the current functional needs and environmental goals of our client. Both existing apartments gain new additional spaces. When seen in context, the overall form reveals an emphasis on reconnecting to nature by visually opening up to the back yard and park area beyond.
