Not very often does one have the chance to take an ugly duckling and create a swan. Gleicher has done just that with this building. Wanting to do what is right for his family and for the environment, Gleicher removed all the toxins that had accumulated over the years and embarked on totally revamping the home.

All new systems were installed, including energy-star rated appliances, an exceptionally efficient boiler and a wood burning fireplace that is so effective only a cup of ashes is left after going through 3 cords of wood. The house is topped with a rooftop glass conservatory nestled between a living green roof. The large casement windows let the light in but because they are filled with argon gas and use low-E glass they keep the harmful ultraviolet rays out. All the cabinetry contains no dangerous formaldehyde and the countertops are made from recycled glass and concrete. The entire master bedroom is a haven of organic furniture designed by Gleicher himself and the house is outfitted with a HEPA central vacuum system and an eco water filtration system.

The house has gained national attention and has been endorsed by the Environmental Defense Fund, Good Housekeeping Magazine, and the Children’s Health Environmental Coalition.
