Homestead

This New Canaan 19th century home was truly a home. This woman traveled all her life as her family never stayed in one place. Although she was well travelled her passion was to stay home with her family and cook. An addition of a box bay had been added for more light. 2 German silver sinks were designed into the home as they depict a period long gone and have the warmth beauty and charm and yet they function as a modern day sink would.

One can request the old fashioned stop and small drain which is period correct or a disposal which many like to do. Older homes are notorious for small closed in rooms and the goal was to open the space as much as possible, by taking down a wall an adding French doors to a back terrace we were able to create a charming warm breakfast area that looked out to beautiful perennial gardens. We selected to install a banquette which also allowed for passage way into a large family room. We also were able to create a peninsula for seating.

This homeowner could cook, and still be a part of what was happening. Whether it be the family room beyond of the eating area. A small message center also which we refer to as command central was installed and as one can see this has been put to use.

The high back on the banquette avoided the uncomfortable back rail from digging into your back. Also looks great and a perfect spot to rest pictures and warm up the space.

The Calcutta gold countertops on the perimeter are timeless.
Costa Esmerelda on the Island is soft looking and yet a very hard material which can take a lot of abuse.

The Ann Morris pot rack is versatile, and is used continuously.
The family room needed book shelves. Rather than taking up valuable space the book shelves were recesses into the wall, for on the other side was a garage and easily could lose the foot.

I must say that after many years this kitchen looks as wonderful and functions today as it did many years ago.
