Island Nest
This modern house is nestled on the western hill of Mercer Island and positioned on the site to maximize the incredible views and westerly light: Lake Washington and the Seattle skyline to the west, and the Bellevue skyline and Cascade Mountains to the east.
The approach was to separate the public spaces from private spaces by creating two separate wings to the house: one grouping all the sleeping areas, and the other housing cooking, playing, working and entertaining activities.
These two wings were then stitched together by a tower, embellished with a steel staircase and windows, that captures the views while transitioning between floors.
