Lakeside House Two

This house on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan is an interesting synthesis of environmental setback requirements and owner preferences. To conform to Department of Environmental Quality requirements, the house favors the backside of the dune away from lake and to the south. This placement is compatible with the owner’s desire to maximize the southern exposure of the house and protect it from harsh winter winds off the lake. In the winter the house is flooded with low-angled south sunlight and protected from the wind by retractable rolling shutters on the lakeside of the house. In the summer the shutters are raised, focusing the house towards the lake views and the breezes. When the trees are foliated, the south facing portions of the house are protected from the sun allowing the majority of light to enter from the lake. Thus, the house is, appropriately, a house of two personalities, one focusing toward the lake in the summer, the other focusing toward the snow-covered woods in the winter.
